How to Plan a Quick 3 day Trip to Kashmir in 2026
How to Plan a Quick 3-Day Trip to Kashmir
3-Day Kashmir Itinerary
Trip at a Glance
Before diving into each day, here’s the shape of the itinerary. The route is circular — you return to Srinagar each evening or stay overnight at each destination (both options are covered below).
For a full breakdown of what to expect on your wallet, see our Kashmir trip cost calculator for 2026. For taxi and cab logistics, read our guide to booking cab services in Kashmir.
Srinagar — The Soul of the Valley
Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir and the natural starting point for any Kashmir trip. Fly into Srinagar airport — well connected from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru — and check in before 10 AM to make the most of the day. Once you land, arrange transport with a pre-booked Kashmir cab service.
Morning: Stay on Dal Lake

If budget allows, spending a night on a houseboat on Dal Lake is an experience unlike any hotel. The lake is famous for its floating gardens (locally called rad), colourful wooden houseboats, and a floating vegetable market that starts at dawn. At 1,583 metres, the mornings are crisp even in summer. For a quieter alternative, consider the serene Nigeen Lake — smaller than Dal and far less crowded.
If you prefer a hotel, our curated list of top hotels in Srinagar covers everything from luxury resorts to heritage stays near the lakefront. Budget travelers should check our Kashmir hostels guide.
Afternoon: Mughal Gardens

Spend the afternoon exploring the Mughal Gardens along the eastern shore of Dal Lake. There are three major gardens worth visiting:
- Nishat Bagh — 12 terraces of fountains, chinar trees, and flower beds; the largest Mughal garden in Kashmir.
- Shalimar Bagh — Built by Emperor Jahangir for Empress Nur Jahan. Famous for its central canal and Persian aesthetic.
- Chashme Shahi — Smallest of the three but fed by a natural spring whose water is said to aid digestion. Worth a 30-minute visit.
All three gardens are within 4 km of each other. A shared taxi or auto-rickshaw can cover all three for under ₹300. If you’re visiting in spring, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden — Asia’s largest — is an unmissable addition, typically opening late March through mid-April.
Evening: Shikara Ride at Sunset
As the sun drops behind the Zabarwan hills, take a Shikara ride on Dal Lake. These wooden boats — often decorated with flowers — glide silently past floating vegetable markets, flower sellers, and the reflected outlines of the houseboats. Negotiate a 1-hour ride for ₹500–700 from the main ghat.
End the evening at one of Srinagar’s popular cafes or try a classic Kashmiri dinner featuring Wazwan dishes. Read our top cafes in Srinagar guide for the best spots. Also explore the Hazratbal Shrine for a peaceful early-evening visit before dinner.
💡 Local Insider Tip
Visit Char Chinar Island in the middle of Dal Lake — four ancient chinar trees on a tiny island. Best viewed from a Shikara or from the Nishat Bagh terrace. It’s free and takes 20 minutes by boat. In autumn, the four trees turn a spectacular crimson — one of the most photographed scenes in all of Kashmir.
Gulmarg — High-Altitude Adventure
Leave Srinagar by 8 AM to beat the tourist rush at Gulmarg. The scenic drive through pine-forested hills and the town of Tangmarg takes roughly 90 minutes. Pack layers — the temperature at Gulmarg is typically 8–15°C cooler than Srinagar. In 2026, Gulmarg continues to rank among Asia’s premier ski destinations and year-round adventure hubs.
The Gulmarg Gondola — Don’t Miss It

The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest cable car systems in the world, running in two phases up to Apharwat Peak (4,200 m). Phase 1 reaches Kongdori (3,090 m) and Phase 2 ascends to the snowline. Book tickets online in advance — the gondola sells out by noon during peak season. Read our complete Gondola ticket booking guide for 2026 prices and timings.
From Apharwat, on a clear day, you can see Nanga Parbat, the Karakoram range, and stretches across the border. The views alone justify the trip. From Phase 1, also consider the short trek to Khilanmarg meadow — one of the finest short hikes in all of Kashmir. On your way back, stop at the Baba Reshi Shrine — a beautiful 15th-century Sufi shrine 5 km from Gulmarg town.
What to Do in Gulmarg by Season
❄️ Winter (Dec–Mar)
Gulmarg hosts Asia’s highest ski resort. Even beginners can rent equipment and take beginner lessons on the lower slopes. Also try snow biking and ice skating. See our skiing in Kashmir guide.
🌸 Spring/Summer (Apr–Sep)
The meadows turn green and wildflowers bloom. Horse riding, trekking to Khilanmarg, and picnics among wildflowers are the main draws. The world’s highest golf course is open through summer.
🍂 Autumn (Oct–Nov)
The chinar and birch trees turn gold. Fewer crowds, crisp air, and excellent photography conditions. A peaceful time to visit with discounted rates. Check our October Kashmir packages.
📸 All Year
The Maharani Temple and Baba Reshi Shrine offer cultural stops year-round. The Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is beautiful in every season. See full activities in our top things to do in Gulmarg 2026 guide.
Return to Srinagar & Evening Shopping
Head back to Srinagar by 4–5 PM and spend the evening in the old city. The Lal Chowk area and Boulevard Road are great for shopping. Look for authentic Pashmina shawls, Kashmiri saffron, walnut-wood carvings, and papier-mâché items. For a curated list, see our top 10 souvenirs to buy in Kashmir. Check our broader 15 things to do in Srinagar guide for more evening options.
Pahalgam — The Valley of Shepherds
Leave by 7:30 AM for Pahalgam to arrive before the day tours crowd the valleys. The drive via NH44 takes you through Awantipora, Bijbehara, and Anantnag — a pleasant valley drive alongside the Jhelum River. Check our Srinagar distances guide for accurate travel times.
Betaab Valley & Aru Valley

Betaab Valley, 15 km east of Pahalgam town, is named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot there. The Lidder River runs turquoise through meadows ringed by dense pine and fir forests. Entry is ₹30 per person; the valley has basic cafes and pony rentals.
Six kilometres further is Aru Valley — quieter, wilder, and more photogenic. Aru is also the main base for treks toward Kolahoi Glacier and the alpine Tarsar-Marsar lakes. Even if you’re not trekking, a 2-hour walk from the village through its pastures is deeply rewarding. For accommodation, browse our Pahalgam hotels guide.
Adventure on the Lidder River

The Lidder River offers excellent river rafting — typically Grade 1–3 rapids, suitable for families and first-timers. A 1-hour rafting session costs ₹600–900 per person through local operators in Pahalgam. Horse riding is another popular option; horses are available near the main bus stand for trips to Baisaran and beyond.
💡 Hidden Gem: Baisaran Valley
Baisaran Valley (2,400 m) — reachable only on horseback or on foot — is Pahalgam’s best-kept secret. The treeless meadow offers a 360° view of snow peaks and is one of the most photographed spots in Kashmir. Allow 3 hours for the round trip. Often called the “Mini Switzerland of Kashmir,” this is a highlight no 3-day visitor should miss.
Food: Wazwan Lunch in Pahalgam
Pahalgam has several restaurants serving authentic Kashmiri Wazwan — a multi-course feast featuring Rogan Josh, Rista, Gushtaba, Yakhni, and more. For lighter options, try the top cafes in Pahalgam. Don’t leave without a cup of Kahwa — the spiced saffron-and-cardamom green tea that every Kashmiri swears by. For a full food guide, explore our top 10 foods to try in Jammu & Kashmir.
Essential Travel Tips for Kashmir in 2026
🌤️ Weather & Packing
Kashmir’s weather changes quickly. Pack thermal layers for Gulmarg even in summer — it’s 8°C cooler than Srinagar. Always carry a light rain jacket April–June.
🪪 Documents
Carry valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, or voter card) at all times. Some check-posts may ask for it. Foreign nationals should check Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines before travel.
🚗 Getting Around
Pre-booking a private cab for all 3 days (₹4,000–6,000/day) gives you full flexibility. Shared sumo taxis are cheaper but less convenient. See our Srinagar distance guide and cab booking guide.
🕌 Cultural Respect
Kashmir is predominantly Muslim. Dress modestly when visiting shrines like Hazratbal and Jamia Masjid. Remove shoes before entering mosques and shrines. Avoid photographing people without permission.
📦 Book in Advance
Gondola tickets, houseboat stays, and popular tour packages sell out weeks ahead during April–June and October. Book via KashmirTickets.com to avoid disappointment.
🏔️ Altitude Awareness
Gulmarg (2,650 m) and Apharwat Peak (4,200 m) can cause mild altitude symptoms — headaches, shortness of breath. Drink plenty of water and ascend the Gondola slowly. Avoid alcohol on your first day at altitude.
