Ganderbal District, J&K · 2,740 m · 80 km from Srinagar
Sonamarg — The Meadow of Gold
Year-round glaciers, Grade III+ Sindh River rapids, alpine lakes at 3,600 metres, and the dramatic gateway to Ladakh. Sonamarg is where Kashmir meets the high Himalayas — raw, vast, and extraordinary.
Sonamarg: Kashmir's Most Dramatic Alpine Destination
Perched at 2,740 metres in Ganderbal district on the banks of the glacial Sindh River, Sonamarg — the Meadow of Gold — is the most dramatic of Kashmir's four major destinations. Where Gulmarg is polished and Pahalgam is lush, Sonamarg is raw — a high-altitude frontier town where the Kashmir Valley gives way to the naked rock and permanent glaciers of the greater Himalayas.
Sonamarg is simultaneously one of Kashmir's most visited day-trip destinations and one of its most underutilised overnight stops. Most visitors come for the day — Thajiwas Glacier, a pony ride, some photos — and leave by evening. But those who stay discover a completely different place: the evening light on the surrounding peaks, the silence after the day-trippers leave, the Sindh River at dawn, and the extraordinary trekking terrain that begins just behind the town.
It's also the strategic launchpad for the Srinagar–Leh road trip — NH1 climbs from Sonamarg over the legendary Zojila Pass at 3,528 metres into Drass and on to Leh Ladakh. Whether you're a trekker, a road trip enthusiast, or simply someone who wants to stand on a glacier, Sonamarg delivers.

Glaciers you can walk on, passes that touch 3,500 metres, and alpine lakes that sit in silence above the clouds.
Thajiwas Glacier
The most accessible glacier in Jammu & Kashmir, just 3–4 km from Sonamarg town. Reach it by pony (30–40 min) or on foot (1–1.5 hrs). The glacier holds snow year-round and offers pony rides, snow walks, and dramatic views of the surrounding ice-clad peaks. Essential to any Sonamarg visit.

Zojila Pass
At 3,528 metres, Zojila is one of the most strategically important mountain passes in India — the link between Kashmir and Ladakh on National Highway 1. The hairpin bends with views of the Dras Valley on one side and Sonamarg on the other make it one of the most dramatic drives in the subcontinent. Open May–November.

Krishansar & Vishansar Lakes
Two pristine alpine lakes at 3,800 metres, reached via a 4–5 day trek from Sonamarg through high Himalayan terrain. Surrounded by glaciers and wildflower meadows at peak altitude, these lakes are among the finest trekking destinations in Kashmir. Excellent trout fishing in summer (permit required).
Great Lakes Trek guide →
Sindh River
The glacier-fed Sindh River flows through Sonamarg at considerable force, particularly in June and July when snowmelt peaks. It's the site of Sonamarg's white-water rafting runs (Grade II–III+), riverside picnics, trout fishing, and the scenic NH1 drive that follows its banks all the way from Srinagar.

Sonamarg Main Meadow
The broad alpine meadow that gives Sonamarg its name — Meadow of Gold — earns that title most dramatically in September when the grasses turn amber and gold before winter sets in. In summer it's vivid green, with wildflowers and the Sindh rushing alongside. The meadow is the town's heart and the departure point for all pony rides.

Gangabal Lake Trek
One of Kashmir's most sacred high-altitude treks — Gangabal Lake sits at 3,600 metres beneath Harmukh Peak (5,142 m) and is considered holy by Kashmiri Pandits. The 4-day trek from Sonamarg (or Naranag) traverses alpine meadows, high passes, and pristine lake country rarely seen by casual tourists.
Kashmir trekking guide →Why Sonamarg Is Kashmir's Most Underrated Overnight Destination
Here's something the Kashmir Tickets team tells every guest who's planning a Sonamarg day trip: stay the night. The difference between Sonamarg as a day visitor and Sonamarg as an overnight guest is extraordinary. During the day, the main meadow fills with tourists, pony rides, and the constant movement of vehicles on NH1. By 5 PM, almost everyone has left. By 7 PM, the valley is yours.
The evening light in Sonamarg is something photographers travel specifically for. The high surrounding peaks — unnamed on most maps but standing well above 4,500 metres — catch the alpenglow in a way that's different from anywhere else in Kashmir. Combined with the sound of the Sindh River and the absence of crowds, a Sonamarg evening is genuinely one of the finest experiences Kashmir offers.
For trekkers, Sonamarg is the launchpad for routes that rival anything in Nepal or Ladakh in terms of alpine quality. The Great Lakes Trek — connecting Sonamarg to Naranag via Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangabal — is widely regarded as one of the finest week-long treks in South Asia. June to September is the window.
For road trippers, Sonamarg is an essential overnight on the Srinagar to Leh journey. Starting from Sonamarg, you cross Zojila Pass in the early morning (before traffic builds), arrive in Drass by midday, and reach Kargil by late afternoon. Kashmir Tickets arranges the full Srinagar–Sonamarg–Leh cab transfer — call +91-9419001246 to plan your route.
Sonamarg also has a snow season unlike anywhere else in the Kashmir valley. While Gulmarg dominates for skiing, Sonamarg's Thajiwas Glacier holds year-round snow — meaning even June visitors can walk on glacial ice, something rare at any accessible Indian destination.
Things to Do in Sonamarg
Glaciers, rapids, high-altitude lakes, and one of India's most dramatic mountain drives — Sonamarg earns its reputation.
Thajiwas Glacier Walk
The centrepiece of every Sonamarg visit. Take a pony from the main meadow (30–40 min) or walk the gentle 4 km trail to reach the glacier. Walk on the ice, explore the moraine, and take in the 360° Himalayan panorama. Guides and ponies are organised at the main meadow stand — no pre-booking required.
Zojila Pass Drive
Drive or hire a cab from Sonamarg to Zojila Pass (25 km, ~1 hour) for one of the most dramatic high-altitude road experiences in India. The pass sits at 3,528 m and on clear days offers simultaneous views of the Kashmir Valley and Drass/Ladakh. Best done early morning. Book a cab through Kashmir Tickets for a safe, guided drive.
White-Water Rafting on the Sindh
The Sindh River offers Grade II–III+ rapids depending on season and water level. Rafting runs operate May to September with the most powerful water in June–July. Full equipment provided. This is one of Kashmir's best rafting experiences — more raw and remote-feeling than the Lidder in Pahalgam. Read our full Kashmir rafting guide.
Multi-Day Alpine Trekking
Sonamarg is the gateway to some of Kashmir's finest high-altitude routes. The Great Lakes Trek (7 days, Sonamarg to Naranag via 7 alpine lakes) is the crown jewel. Shorter options include the Krishansar–Vishansar route (4 days) and Gangabal Lake (4 days). All require a registered guide — contact us to arrange.
Horse Riding Across the Meadow
Pony rides are Sonamarg's most accessible activity — from short meadow loops to the full Thajiwas Glacier return. Available from early morning until late afternoon at the main meadow. Local pony-wallahs are friendly and knowledgeable; most speak enough Hindi and English to guide you. Rates are government-regulated.
Trout Fishing in Sindh & Alpine Lakes
The Sindh River and the alpine lakes above Sonamarg (Krishansar, Vishansar) are premier brown and rainbow trout fishing destinations. Permits are available from the J&K Fisheries Department in Sonamarg. Best season is May to September. Guides with local knowledge of the best spots can be arranged through Kashmir Tickets.
