What is the Best Time to See Snow in Kashmir?
Best Time to See Snow in Kashmir
Kashmir is always my dream destination. Sometimes, it is referred to as “Paradise on Earth,” it is a magical place to visit when it is covered in snow as well as mountains and trees. The experience of visiting Kashmir during winter is like being in a postcard. Every moment is awe-inspiring whether it’s walking along Snow in Kashmir pathways to enjoying thrilling activities in the beautiful white landscapes.
When I set out to prepare my trip to experience snowfall in Kashmir I realized that the timing of my trip was crucial. Let me share my experiences and suggestions for getting the most stunning of Kashmir in all its snowy splendour.
When Does It Snow in Kashmir?
The winter season in Kashmir commences in late October in higher altitudes and the snowfall peak is from December through February. In these seasons, snow turns the area into an winter magical place. It’s an ideal experience for people who love adventure and people who desire to take in the winter beauty.
I went to the area in January, and believe me when I say it was stunning. The thick snow blankets draped across valleys, sparkling snowflakes shining in the sun and imposing mountains and all covered in white. But knowing the best places to go can make an enormous difference.
My Favourite Snow Destinations in Kashmir
Every destination in Kashmir has its own charm in the winter months, and I got the chance to go through some. These are my personal favourites:
- Gulmarg The winter sport capital of India, it is a capital it is a paradise for snowboarding and skiing. The Gulmarg Gondola to take in the stunning snow-covered landscapes is an absolute must!
- Pahalgam: The meadows covered in snow and the frozen rivers are ideal for long, quiet hikes. It was so tranquil I felt like I was in the world of a fairy-tale.
- Sonamarg While it’s more challenging to use in winter, my visit in the month of October or March provided me with stunning views of snow-capped peaks.
- Srinagar: I did not expect snow to cover the city However, Dal Lake in winter is beautiful, particularly with a light coating of snow covering the houseboats and shikaras as well as on the houseboats.
Best Months to Witness Snow
Here’s what I discovered about Kashmir’s snow seasons as I planned my journey:
- December It’s snowing in the most serious way. Lower regions such as Srinagar get light snowfall, and Gulmarg and Sonmarg have more snowfall.
- January The month of peak winter and the coldest month. The entire landscape is covered by an icy blanket of snow and it’s the perfect month for snow-shoeing, or just taking in the beautiful scenery.
- January: It’s the time for winter to decrease, but there’s plenty of snow in higher elevations. If you’re seeking less crowds, then this is the best time to go.
- November and March These are the months of transition. November brings the first hint of winter in the mountain ranges and March brings a mixture with melting snow, and also the beginning of spring flowers.
Will There Be Snow After March?
I was curious whether I could observe snow even after the winter. What I discovered:
- April through June It is a time of retreating snow to higher elevations however Gulmarg remains a good place to be.
- July through September There is no snow however, those lush valleys with green hills and the vibrant autumn compensate for it.
- October The end of the month brings snow starts to fall in higher elevations and signals the return of winter.
Packing for a Snowy Adventure
I carefully packed for the cold and here’s the things I recommend you pack:
- Clothing: Thermal wear, sweaters, thick jackets and snow-proof pants.
- footwear: Waterproof snow boots are lifesavers.
- accessories: Woollen hats, scarfs, gloves sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats (yes the snow reflect sunlight extremely).
- The essentials are: A power bank as well as lip balm and an emergency kit that includes hand warmers.
