Asia's Largest Tulip Garden — The Story
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden (also called Siraj Bagh) was established in 2007 by the J&K government to boost Kashmir's floriculture and spring tourism. In less than two decades it has become Asia's largest tulip garden — a title that is not merely honorary. At 30 hectares with over 1.5 million tulips, it surpasses comparable gardens in the Netherlands, Japan, and across South Asia.
The garden is laid out across seven terraced levels on the lower slopes of the Zabarwan Mountains, facing directly southwest over Dal Lake. From the upper terraces, the view of tulip carpets cascading down to the shimmering lake with snow-capped peaks behind is one of the finest panoramas in all of Kashmir. The garden's position, facing the lake on the eastern shore, means morning light illuminates it from behind the mountains while the flowers glow in direct afternoon sun — making both morning and late-afternoon visits rewarding for photographers.
The Tulip Festival — held during peak bloom — features Kashmiri cultural performances, handicraft exhibitions, traditional food stalls, and photography competitions. It's one of the most attended events in the J&K tourism calendar.
Timing is everything here. The garden opens when the first varieties bloom (mid-March in most years) and closes when the last flowers fade (mid-to-late April). The peak of all 60+ varieties blooming simultaneously typically lasts just 10–14 days. Call Kashmir Tickets at +91-9419001246 for real-time bloom status — we're in Srinagar and know exactly when peak bloom is happening.
Featured Tulip Varieties
60+ varieties bloom in sequence across the terraces — these are the highlights most visitors come to photograph.
Queen of the Night
The rarest and most photographed — deep maroon-black with a velvety texture. Blooms in the upper terraces.
Golden Apeldoorn
Vibrant golden yellow, blooming in large swaths across the middle terraces. Classic and unmissable.
Pink Impression
Soft rose-pink with gentle frilled edges. One of the garden's most romantic and photographed varieties.
Red Oxford
Deep crimson red — one of the earliest to bloom and most dramatic against the mountain backdrop.
Orange Emperor
Warm flame-orange, one of the largest blooms in the garden and among the most eye-catching.
White Triumphator
Pure white with elegant lily-shaped blooms — particularly stunning against the blue of Dal Lake.

Insider Tips from Our Srinagar Team
Check bloom status before booking
The garden's peak bloom shifts by 1–3 weeks each year. Call us at +91-9419001246 for real-time status — we're in Srinagar and know exactly what's blooming.
Go on a weekday morning
The Tulip Garden is exceptionally crowded on weekends and public holidays during peak season. A Tuesday or Wednesday 9 AM visit offers near-empty terraces and calm photography.
Combine with nearby Mughal Gardens
The Tulip Garden, Nishat Bagh, and Shalimar Bagh are all on Dal Lake's eastern shore within 5 km of each other. Combine all three in a half-day sightseeing circuit.
Wear comfortable shoes
The garden has seven terraces connected by pathways and stairs. Comfortable walking shoes (not heels or sandals) are essential for the full circuit.
Carry cash
Gate entry tickets are cash/UPI. Food stalls inside the garden during the Festival are cash-preferred. Have ₹200–₹500 in small notes.
Book your Kashmir trip early
The 2–3 week Tulip Festival window drives a massive spike in hotel and houseboat bookings. If the Tulip Garden is your primary reason to visit, book accommodation 6–8 weeks in advance.
