The glacier-fed Sindh River flows through Sonamarg at considerable force, particularly in June and July when snowmelt peaks. It's the site of Sonamarg's white-water rafting runs (Grade IIβIII+), riverside picnics, trout fishing, and the scenic NH1 drive that follows its banks all the way from Srinagar.

The broad alpine meadow that gives Sonamarg its name β Meadow of Gold β earns that title most dramatically in September when the grasses turn amber and gold before winter sets in. Sonamarg also has a snow season unlike anywhere else in the Kashmir valley. While Gulmarg dominates for skiing, Sonamarg's Thajiwas Glacier holds year-round snow β meaning even June visitors can walk on glacial ice, something rare at any accessible Indian destination.

Sonamarg is the gateway to some of Kashmir's finest high-altitude routes. The Great Lakes Trek (7 days, Sonamarg to Naranag via 7 alpine lakes) is the crown jewel. Pony rides are Sonamarg's most accessible activity β from short meadow loops to the full Thajiwas Glacier return. Available from early morning until late afternoon at the main meadow. Local pony-wallahs are friendly and knowledgeable; most speak enough Hindi and English to guide you. Rates are government-regulated.
The Sindh River and the alpine lakes above Sonamarg (Krishansar, Vishansar) are premier brown and rainbow trout fishing destinations.
