Kashmir in Winter: Should You Visit in January, February, or March?
Kashmir Tickets — Local Travel Team, Srinagar

Every week we receive the same question from travellers planning their Kashmir trip: “Should I come in January, February, or March?”
The honest answer — and what most travel articles won’t tell you is that these three months offer completely different Kashmir. January is intense and raw. February is balanced and reliable. March is comfortable and visually gentle. The right month depends entirely on what you’re seeking, your flexibility, and who you’re travelling with.
This guide is built on what we witness every winter running tours and transfers from Srinagar. No filler just the information that helps you decide.

Kashmir in January: Peak Winter, Raw and Unfiltered
Temp: -8°C to 4°C
Accessibility: Limited
Comfort: Low
January sits in the heart of Chilla-i-Kalan — the 40-day period Kashmiris consider the most intense stretch of winter. This is when Srinagar records its lowest temperatures, the Dal Lake partially freezes, and Gulmarg receives its deepest powder snowfall of the year. If you’ve ever seen a photograph of snow-draped chinar trees reflected in a frozen lake, it was almost certainly taken in January.
It is also the most logistically challenging month. Heavy snowfall events can close the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway for one to three days at a time. Flights into Srinagar airport get delayed during zero-visibility snowstorms. Internal routes to Pahalgam and Gulmarg require snow chains and experienced drivers. Flexibility is not optional in January — it is essential.

What January in Kashmir Is Really Like
Gulmarg is the headline act. With base-level snow depths often exceeding 4–6 feet, it becomes one of Asia’s top skiing and snowboarding destinations. The Phase 1 and Phase 2 Gondola cabins operate (weather permitting) to 4,390m, giving access to high-altitude runs that experienced skiers rate among the best in South Asia. Snow activities — snowshoeing, snow biking, sledding — are also at their peak.
In Srinagar, the Mughal gardens and Dal Lake viewpoints offer intensely photogenic scenes. But many houseboat operators reduce services in deep January cold, and restaurant choices narrow slightly outside main tourist areas.
Who Should Visit Kashmir in January
January suits serious skiers or snowboarders wanting Gulmarg’s best conditions, travel photographers chasing once-in-a-year winter scenes, and adventurous solo or couple travellers experienced with cold-weather trips. It is not recommended for first-time Kashmir visitors, families with young children, senior travellers, or anyone on a fixed tight itinerary.

Kashmir in February: The Sweet Spot of Winter
Temp: -4°C to 8°C
Accessibility: Good
Comfort: Medium
February is the month we most consistently recommend to travellers who ask for honest advice. Chilla-i-Kalan ends in late January, and February brings what locals call a more forgiving winter — cold enough to keep Gulmarg blanketed in snow, yet stable enough for roads to remain open and flights to run reliably.
The Gulmarg Gondola operates with far fewer weather-related closures in February. Ski slopes are well-groomed, lessons and rentals are fully available, and the overall infrastructure around winter tourism is at its best. For couples and honeymooners, February in Kashmir — with snow-covered valleys, quiet lakes, and warm Kashmiri wazwan dinners — is one of the most romantic settings in India.

What Makes February Different from January
The key practical difference is predictability. In January, a single heavy snowfall event can restructure your entire itinerary. In February, snowfall remains consistent but extreme weather events drop significantly. Srinagar city is more accessible, houseboat operators are more reliably open, and the road to Pahalgam — giving access to the snow-covered Aru Valley and Betaab Valley — is generally navigable.
Who Should Visit Kashmir in February
February suits a wide range of travellers — honeymooners and couples, families comfortable with cold weather, skiing enthusiasts who want reliable conditions, and first-time Kashmir winter visitors who want genuine snow without January’s unpredictability.

Kashmir in March: Winter’s Farewell and Spring’s First Signs
Temp: 2°C to 14°C
Accessibility: Very Good
Comfort: High
March is the transition month — the one where Kashmir seems to exhale after winter’s intensity. Snow doesn’t vanish; it retreats. The valley floor clears first, mid-altitude roads open up fully, while Gulmarg and higher passes remain genuinely snowy, especially in the first half of the month.
What makes March exceptional is its accessibility combined with visual beauty. Daytime temperatures in Srinagar climb to the low double digits. You can explore the Mughal Gardens, Dal Lake, and the old city in real comfort. The countryside shows the first hints of green breaking through snow — a contrast photographers love.

What to Expect in March
Early March (1st–10th) still feels very much like winter, especially above 2,500m. Gulmarg skiing is often still operational. Mid-March begins the genuine transition — temperatures warm, lower valley roads are fully clear, and sightseeing becomes comfortable even for those unaccustomed to cold climates. By late March, the valley is preparing for its famous tulip season and the energy around Srinagar shifts noticeably.
Who Should Visit Kashmir in March
March is ideal for first-time Kashmir visitors, families with children or elderly members, travellers on fixed itineraries who cannot afford weather disruptions, and those who want a winter-flavoured trip without extreme conditions. It is also well-suited for travellers combining Srinagar sightseeing with day trips to Pahalgam and beyond.

Where to Stay: Winter Hotels in Kashmir
January & February: Stay in Gulmarg if skiing is your priority — ensure your hotel has heating certified for -10°C+ conditions. A Srinagar base works well for those mixing sightseeing with day trips. Houseboats on Dal Lake are operational but choose ones with proper winter heating.
March: Srinagar is the ideal base — central, comfortable, and a short drive from Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and all major sightseeing destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which month has the most snowfall in Kashmir?
January records the heaviest snowfall — the peak of Chilla-i-Kalan. Gulmarg can receive several feet of fresh powder in a single week. February snowfall is also significant but less extreme. March snowfall is limited mainly to higher altitudes above 2,500m.
Is it safe to travel to Kashmir in January?
Yes — Kashmir is safe in January, but logistics can be challenging. Heavy snowfall can close roads and delay flights. We recommend refundable bookings, a reliable local transport partner, and buffer days in your itinerary. Travelling with a registered local operator significantly reduces disruption risk.
Is February the best month to visit Kashmir in winter?
For most travellers, yes. February offers substantial snow cover, reliable Gondola and ski access, better roads than January, and a romantic atmosphere suited to couples and families. It is the month we recommend most confidently to first-time winter Kashmir visitors.
Can you still ski in Gulmarg in March?
In early March (1st–10th), yes — Gulmarg typically still has good snow and the Gondola may be operational. By mid-March, conditions depend heavily on that year’s snowfall. If skiing is your main goal, January or February is far more dependable.
What should I pack for a winter trip to Kashmir?
January: Thermal base layers, heavy down jacket, waterproof snow boots, gloves, balaclava, hand warmers, and sunglasses for snow glare. February: Similar but slightly lighter options. March: A medium-weight down jacket, removable layers, and waterproof footwear for slushy roads.
How do I get to Kashmir in winter?
Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is the primary entry point, well-connected to Delhi, Mumbai, and other major Indian cities. Flying is strongly recommended for winter travel. See packages from Delhi → | See packages from Mumbai →
