What is the Best Time to See Snow in Kashmir?

❄️

Written by the KashmirTickets Travel Team

Our team has guided Kashmir winter trips since 2015. The snowfall timings, destination recommendations, and packing advice in this guide are based on first-hand ground experience and verified seasonal data — updated for the 2026 winter season.

⚡ Quick Snow Guide

  • Peak snowfall: December to February — heaviest in January
  • Best for snow: Gulmarg (reliable all winter), then Pahalgam and Sonamarg
  • Snow after March: Yes — Gulmarg and Sonamarg retain snow through April–May
  • Don’t miss: Gulmarg Gondola, skiing, Shikara on partly-frozen Dal Lake
  • Must try: Kehwa, Harissa and Rogan Josh — Kashmir’s winter comfort foods

Kashmir in winter is unlike anywhere else in India. The moment the first snow settles on the Zabarwan peaks and drifts across the houseboats of Dal Lake, the valley transforms — and if you’ve timed your visit right, you’ll understand exactly why Kashmir has been called “Paradise on Earth” for centuries.

But timing a snow trip to Kashmir isn’t as simple as picking December and showing up. The snowfall pattern varies significantly by altitude, by month, and by destination. Gulmarg in January is a completely different experience from Pahalgam in March — and knowing the difference is what separates an unforgettable winter trip from a disappointing one.

This guide is based on our team’s direct experience planning and operating Kashmir winter tours since 2015. Everything here — from month-by-month snowfall expectations to packing lists — reflects what actually happens on the ground, not weather averages copied from a spreadsheet.

When Does It Snow in Kashmir?

Snowfall in Kashmir follows a clear seasonal pattern tied closely to altitude. Winter in Kashmir begins in late October at higher elevations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, while the Srinagar valley typically sees its first significant snowfall in December. The peak snowfall window runs from December through February, with January being the single coldest and snowiest month across the valley.

Understanding this pattern by destination is critical. Gulmarg sits at 2,650 metres — it gets more snow, holds it longer, and is reliably white from November through March. Pahalgam at 2,130 metres gets heavy snow in winter but melts faster in spring. Srinagar at 1,585 metres sees lighter, shorter-lived snowfall — beautiful when it arrives, but not guaranteed every week.

Best Months to See Snow in Kashmir — Month by Month

Here is an honest breakdown of what to expect each month, based on our team’s ground experience:

Month Snow Level Where to Go Best For
November Light — higher elevations only Gulmarg, Sonamarg Shoulder season, fewer crowds
December Heavy at Gulmarg; moderate in valley Gulmarg, Srinagar, Pahalgam First-time snow seekers, skiing begins
January Peak snowfall — heaviest of the year Gulmarg, Dal Lake, Pahalgam Deep snow, skiing, snowshoeing
February Heavy — ski resort peak season Gulmarg, Srinagar, Pahalgam Skiing, snowboarding, winter photography
March Melting in valley, snow at peaks Gulmarg, Sonamarg Snow + early spring, fewer crowds
April – May Snow at high elevations only Gulmarg Phase 2, Sonamarg Glacier Snow + green valleys combination

💡 Our recommendation: For the most reliable and dramatic snowfall, plan for late December through February. January gives you the deepest snow but also the coldest temperatures. If you want snow without extreme cold, late November or March are excellent shoulder options.

Best Snow Destinations in Kashmir

Not every part of Kashmir looks the same in winter. Here is what to expect at each major destination and why they’re worth the visit in the snowy months:

1. Gulmarg — Kashmir’s Snow Capital

Gulmarg snowfall in winter — skiing and Gondola rides in Kashmir

Gulmarg in deep winter — India’s premier ski destination and Kashmir’s most reliable snow destination.

Gulmarg is the single most reliable snow destination in all of Kashmir. Sitting at 2,650 metres, it receives consistent snowfall from November through March and is home to India’s premier ski resort. The Gulmarg Gondola — Asia’s highest cable car — is operational through winter and offers panoramic snow views from Phase 1 (3,050m) and Phase 2 (3,980m).

What makes Gulmarg special in winter isn’t just the snow — it’s the scale of it. The meadows, the surrounding pines, and the Himalayan peaks beyond are all buried in white from December onwards. Whether you’re a skier or just want to stand knee-deep in powder, Gulmarg delivers. See our guide to things to do in Gulmarg for the full picture.

2. Pahalgam — Snow-Covered Meadows and Frozen Rivers

Pahalgam in winter with snow-covered meadows and frozen Lidder River

Pahalgam in winter — quieter and more peaceful than Gulmarg, with beautiful snow-dusted pine forests.

Pahalgam in winter is a completely different experience from its summer self. The Lidder river slows and partially freezes, the meadows of Betaab Valley lie under a quiet blanket of snow, and the pine forests are hushed and still. It’s a destination for travellers who want the beauty of Kashmir’s snow without the activity-driven bustle of Gulmarg.

Pahalgam receives good snowfall in January and February, and the walking trails around the town are beautiful in fresh snow. It’s one of our favourite recommendations for couples and photographers who want atmosphere over activity. Browse our guide to things to do in Pahalgam for more detail.

3. Srinagar — Dal Lake in Winter

Dal Lake in winter with snow-dusted houseboats and mountains — Srinagar Kashmir

Dal Lake in winter — a rare and haunting beauty, especially when light snow settles on the houseboats and shikaras.

Most people don’t think of Srinagar as a snow destination — but Dal Lake in winter is one of Kashmir’s most distinctive sights. When snowfall dusts the wooden houseboats, settles on the shikaras, and mists the mountains across the water, the lake takes on a haunting, almost monochromatic beauty. January snowfall in Srinagar is not guaranteed every year but when it happens, it is extraordinary.

Even without snowfall, Srinagar in winter is worth visiting. The old city, the Shankaracharya Temple above the lake, and the Mughal Gardens are all far less crowded in winter and take on a completely different quality of light. See our full list of things to do in Srinagar.

4. Sonamarg — Snow at the Glacier

Dal Lake in winter with snow-dusted houseboats and mountains — Srinagar Kashmir

Sonamarg  — the mountains whisper peace that the world forgets to hear

Sonamarg is more challenging to access in deep winter due to road conditions, but it rewards those who visit in shoulder months. October and early November bring the first snow to the Sindh Valley, while March and April offer a combination of deep glacier snow at Thajiwas and early spring colour in the lower valley. Our guide to Sonamarg covers the full seasonal picture.

Is There Snow in Kashmir After March?

Yes — but it depends on altitude. Here is the honest picture of snow availability into the spring months:

  • April and May: Snow retreats to higher elevations. Gulmarg Phase 2 still has substantial snow. The Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg is snow-covered and accessible from May.
  • June through September: No snow in accessible areas. The valleys are at their most lush and green — a completely different but equally beautiful Kashmir experience.
  • October: Snow begins returning to higher elevations from mid-October onwards. An early winter visit in late October can catch fresh snowfall at Gulmarg alongside autumn colour in the valley.

If you want snow but can’t visit in peak winter, late March to early April is a sweet spot: Gulmarg still has excellent snow, Srinagar’s Tulip Garden is coming into bloom, and the temperatures are far more comfortable than January. Read about spring in Kashmir for full details.

Activities to Try in Kashmir’s Winter

Skiing in Gulmarg Kashmir — winter activities in snow

Skiing at Gulmarg — India’s best ski destination, open from December through February for all skill levels.

Kashmir in winter is far from a passive experience. Here are the activities our guests most consistently recommend:

  • Skiing and snowboarding at Gulmarg: India’s best ski resort is suitable for complete beginners through advanced skiers. Equipment rental, lessons, and ski guides are all available on-site. See our skiing in Kashmir guide for what to expect.
  • Gulmarg Gondola ride: The cable car gives you panoramic Himalayan views from 3,980 metres even if you’re not skiing. One of the most breathtaking experiences in India in any season — in winter it’s otherworldly. Book via our Gondola ticket guide.
  • Shikara ride on Dal Lake: A winter Shikara ride on partially frozen Dal Lake — wrapped in blankets with the snow-dusted mountains reflected in the water — is genuinely one of Kashmir’s most memorable experiences.
  • Snowshoeing and snow trails around Pahalgam: The trails around Pahalgam and Betaab Valley are hauntingly beautiful under snow. Walking them in fresh powder is a very different and deeply peaceful experience.
  • Winter Drang village visit: The village of Drang in winter is an off-the-beaten-path gem — a traditional Kashmiri village surrounded by snow-covered landscapes most tourists never reach.

What to Pack for a Winter Snow Trip to Kashmir

Packing correctly for Kashmir in winter is essential — the cold is genuine and the temperature variation between Srinagar and Gulmarg on the same day can be 10°C or more. Here is what we recommend based on our team’s experience:

Clothing

  • Thermal base layers (top and bottom) — non-negotiable for Gulmarg and Pahalgam
  • Mid-layer fleece or down jacket for insulation
  • Heavy outer jacket — windproof and waterproof for Gulmarg specifically
  • Snow-proof trousers or ski pants if spending time in deep snow

Footwear

  • Waterproof snow boots with grip soles — essential. Standard sneakers will be soaked within minutes in Gulmarg snow.
  • Thick wool socks — at least two pairs per day at higher elevations

Accessories

  • Woollen hat covering the ears
  • Waterproof gloves (not knitted — they get wet)
  • Scarf or neck gaiter
  • Sunglasses — snow reflects UV strongly; eye protection is important
  • High-SPF sunscreen — especially for Gulmarg where UV at altitude is strong

Essentials

  • Power bank — cold drains phone batteries significantly faster
  • Lip balm and heavy moisturiser — dry mountain air cracks lips and skin quickly
  • Hand warmers — invaluable for long outdoor days at Gulmarg

🧳 Team tip: Gulmarg has ski and winter gear rental on-site if you don’t want to bring bulky equipment on your flight. Quality varies — if you plan to ski for more than a day, consider bringing your own gloves and goggles as rental quality can be inconsistent.

Best Foods for a Kashmir Winter Trip

Kashmiri Wazwan winter food — Harissa, Rogan Josh and Kehwa

Kashmir’s winter food culture is one of the warmest parts of the experience — Harissa, Rogan Josh and Kehwa are essential.

Kashmiri winter food is genuinely one of the highlights of a snow trip. The cuisine was designed for cold — slow-cooked, heavily spiced, deeply warming. Our full guide to Kashmiri food covers the full spread, but here are the three you must have in winter:

  • Harissa: A traditional winter-only slow-cooked meat dish simmered for hours with whole spices. Harissa stalls open before dawn in Srinagar’s old city — locals queue for it on cold mornings and it is unlike anything else in Indian cuisine. It is rarely available outside winter.
  • Rogan Josh: The most iconic Kashmiri lamb dish — rich, deeply aromatic, and best eaten when the temperature outside is below zero. Proper Kashmiri Rogan Josh bears no resemblance to restaurant versions elsewhere.
  • Kehwa: Saffron-infused green tea with almonds, cardamom, and cinnamon. The standard drink between sightseeing stops in winter and genuinely warming. Every houseboat and most restaurants serve it — drink as much as you can.

Our Tips for a Perfect Kashmir Snow Trip

  • Book December to February for the most reliable snowfall. January is the peak but February offers better skiing conditions once ski runs are well-packed.
  • Base yourself in Gulmarg for 2 nights if skiing or snow activities are your main goal. Srinagar is better as a base for day trips and the overall Kashmir experience.
  • Don’t skip Srinagar’s winter. Most people rush to Gulmarg and neglect the city — but Dal Lake, the old city bazaars, and the Hazratbal Shrine in winter are remarkable.
  • Check the Kashmir weather guide before finalising your dates — heavy snowfall can temporarily close mountain roads.
  • Consider luxury accommodation for winter. A well-heated heritage houseboat or a mountain resort with a fireplace elevates the experience enormously. See our luxury Kashmir guide for the best options.
  • Budget correctly for winter. Costs are different in peak season. Our Kashmir trip cost guide gives realistic 2026 figures.
