Kashmir's Two Best Rafting Rivers

Two rivers, two characters — both exceptional. Here's the full comparison.

Lidder River rafting Pahalgam — white water through pine forest
⭐ Most Popular · Grade II–III+

Lidder River — Pahalgam

The Lidder is Kashmir's most popular rafting river — 15 km of excellent rapids through Pahalgam's spectacular pine forests and open meadows. The river runs crystal-clear from Kolahoi Glacier, and the scenery through the gorge section is genuinely breathtaking.

Sindh River — Sonamarg

The Sindh River at Sonamarg offers a different character — more open, more dramatic mountain scenery, and slightly calmer than the Lidder's gorge sections. The backdrop of snow-capped peaks and the "Meadow of Gold" makes this a visually stunning rafting experience.

Safety & What to Expect

Rafting in Kashmir is safe with proper preparation — here's everything you need to know.

✅ Safety Rules

  • 🟢 Always wear the life jacket provided — no exceptions, even for strong swimmers
  • 🟢 Wear the helmet for the entire rapid section
  • 🟢 Follow your guide's paddle commands immediately
  • 🟢 If you fall out, keep feet forward, float on your back, wait for the raft
  • 🟢 Do not raft if intoxicated or on medication affecting coordination
  • 🟢 Inform your guide of any medical conditions before starting

👕 What to Wear & Bring

  • 👕 Synthetic/quick-dry clothing — cotton takes too long to dry and gets cold
  • 👟 Secure shoes (trainers or sandals with ankle straps) — no flip-flops
  • 🕶️ Sunglasses (secured with a strap) for bright Himalayan sun on the water
  • 🧴 Waterproof sunscreen — UV is intense at altitude
  • 📱 Leave phones/cameras in a dry bag or with your driver — the rapids will get everything wet
  • 🧥 Bring a dry layer for after — temperatures drop once you're wet

Insider Tips from Our Team

1

Book morning slots

Morning rafting on the Lidder gives the best light for photography, coolest temperatures, and highest energy from overnight snowmelt flow. Afternoon flow may be slightly lower.

2

May for maximum rapids

If excitement is your priority, visit in May — peak snowmelt from Kolahoi Glacier makes the Lidder's rapids at their most thrilling Grade III+ of the season.

3

Combine Pahalgam + Sonamarg in one trip

A 7–8 day Kashmir adventure package can include rafting on both the Lidder (Pahalgam) and Sindh (Sonamarg). View adventure packages →

4

Use certified operators only

Only book rafting through JKTDC-registered operators with certified guides and inspected equipment. Kashmir Tickets pre-screens all rafting partners. Call us at +91-9419001246.

5

Not suitable for very young children

Most responsible operators require minimum age 8–10 for Grade III sections. Children under 12 should do the calmer stretches only. Ask about age restrictions when booking.

6

Leave valuables in the car

You will get wet. Leave phones, cameras, wallets, and any non-waterproof items locked in your vehicle. Kashmir Tickets' cabs wait at the takeout point while you raft.
