Horse Riding in Kashmir — Explore on Sturdy Mountain Ponies
Kashmiri mountain ponies have carried travellers through these valleys for centuries — sure-footed on mountain trails, gentle with children, and the only way to reach meadows and viewpoints that no vehicle can. The most inclusive adventure activity in Kashmir.
Best Horse Riding Locations in Kashmir
Three destinations, three completely different riding experiences.
Pahalgam — Most Variety
The best horse riding destination in Kashmir — the most routes, the most scenic, and the longest available rides. Ponies here travel shepherd trails used for centuries.
- Baisaran Meadow (1.5–2 hrs) — "Mini Switzerland"
- Aru Valley (3–4 hrs) — pine forests & streams
- Chandanwari (4–5 hrs) — snowline in season
- Lidder River circuit (30 min) — gentle beginner ride
Gulmarg — Meadow Circuits
Shorter rides around the Gulmarg bowl with spectacular views of the Pir Panjal range and the Gondola cable car. Popular for families and as an add-on to the Gondola visit.
- Gulmarg bowl circuit (45 min–1 hr)
- Khilanmarg approach trail (2–3 hrs)
- Alpather Lake direction (3–4 hrs)
Sonamarg — Glacier Trek
The Thajiwas Glacier pony trek is one of Kashmir's iconic experiences — riding from Sonamarg town to the glacier base (7 km), with snow underfoot even in July.
- Thajiwas Glacier pony trek (3–4 hrs round trip)
- Sonamarg meadow circuit (1 hr)

Tips for Your Kashmir Horse Ride
Always fix price and route before starting
State exactly which viewpoints you want included, confirm the price, and shake on it. Ambiguity at the end leads to disputes. Pahalgam union riders have official fare lists — ask to see them.
Wear closed shoes with ankle support
Your feet will be in stirrups on mountain terrain. Trainers or hiking shoes are ideal. Sandals and flip-flops are not suitable and you may be turned away.
Children are completely safe
Kashmiri ponies are small, gentle mountain animals — not tall horses. A handler walks alongside holding the reins at all times. Children as young as 3 ride comfortably. No experience is needed by anyone in your group.
Best in the morning
Morning rides (8–11 AM) avoid midday sun and peak crowds, especially at Pahalgam and Gulmarg. The light is also better for photography, and the ponies are freshest.
For Chandanwari — start by 7 AM
The Chandanwari route from Pahalgam is a long ride (4–5 hrs). Starting early ensures you reach the snowline before afternoon clouds build and return before dark.
Tip your handler
A ₹100–₹200 tip for a good handler is appreciated and customary. These are skilled mountain professionals who know every trail and keep inexperienced riders safe.
