Less visited than Pangong but arguably more beautiful, Tso Moriri sits at 4,522 metres on the Changthang Plateau. Ladakh's defining characteristic is contrast. Nowhere else in India — perhaps nowhere on Earth — do you find sand dunes within sight of glaciers, or a camel ride followed by a monastery visit at 4,000 metres. The landscape is so varied that no two days feel the same: today you're camping at Pangong Lake watching the water shift colour; tomorrow you're eating butter tea in a monastery courtyard in Diskit while monks conduct morning prayers.
