Gulmarg — The Meadow of Flowers
Asia's premier ski resort. One of the world's highest gondola cable cars. Wildflower meadows that stretch across the Pir Panjal. Welcome to Kashmir's most iconic year-round destination.
Gulmarg: Kashmir's Crown Jewel at 2,650 Metres
Nestled among the Pir Panjal peaks in Baramulla district, Gulmarg — literally "Meadow of Flowers" — sits 56 km west of Srinagar and has drawn travellers, skiers, and naturalists for over a century. Our team at Kashmir Tickets has operated Gulmarg experiences for thousands of guests from across India and the world, and we know this destination better than anyone.
In winter, Gulmarg transforms into India's finest ski resort, with powder slopes on Apharwat Peak reaching 3,979 metres. Come spring, the snowmelt gives way to carpets of wildflowers and vibrant meadows ideal for horse riding, trekking, and photography. Summer brings emerald-green bowls, open trekking routes to Khilanmarg and Alpather Lake, and temperatures that feel like a natural air conditioner compared to the rest of India.
Whether you are planning a honeymoon in Kashmir, a family trip, or a solo adventure, Gulmarg is a non-negotiable stop on every Kashmir itinerary.

All Gulmarg activities →Why Gulmarg Is Unlike Any Other Hill Station in India
Most Indian hill stations offer one season. Gulmarg offers four — and each is radically different. That is the defining characteristic that keeps guests returning year after year, and it is why Kashmir Tickets consistently rates Gulmarg as the single most valuable night on any Kashmir tour package.
In December through February, Gulmarg is blanketed in 3–8 feet of fresh powder. The Gulmarg Gondola lifts skiers and snowboarders to the upper Apharwat runs, while the lower bowl is perfect for beginners and snow activities like sledging and snowman building. For honeymooners, a winter evening in Gulmarg — with the valley glowing under fresh snow and wood fires crackling inside huts — is genuinely unforgettable.
March and April are transitional and magical. Spring snowfall is still possible, yet the lower meadows begin to green up. This is when Gulmarg is at its least crowded and arguably its most photogenic.
May through September brings the meadow to life. Wildflowers carpet Khilanmarg. The trek to Alpather Lake fully opens. Horse riding through the Gulmarg bowl is at its most scenic. Temperatures hover around 15°C — welcome relief for visitors from the Indian plains. Combined with a day trip to Sonamarg or a morning at Doodhpathri, a summer Gulmarg visit can easily fill three days of pure mountain beauty.
October and November bring golden deodar forests, thin crowds, and crisp mountain air. This is when seasoned Kashmir travellers come — the October Kashmir package crowd knows that post-peak season is when the valley is at its most authentic.
Things to Do in Gulmarg
From powder runs to putting greens — Gulmarg has more packed into its bowl than most destinations manage in an entire region.
Gulmarg Gondola Ride
The must-do experience. Ride Phase 1 to Kongdoori (3,080 m) for sweeping valley views, or take Phase 2 all the way to Apharwat Peak (3,979 m) for a near-summit experience. Book Gondola tickets in advance — especially during December–March and April–May.
Skiing & Snowboarding
Gulmarg's ski season runs December to March. The terrain suits all skill levels. Certified instructors, ski equipment rental, and heli-skiing packages are available. Read our full skiing in Kashmir guide before you book.
Trekking — Alpather Lake & Khilanmarg
Two classic treks. Khilanmarg (6 km round trip from town) is accessible May–October and ideal for families. The Alpather Lake trek (13 km) is best June–September and rewards with a dramatic glacial lake. Local guides recommended — contact us at Kashmir Tickets.
Horse Riding Through the Bowl
Pony rides across the main Gulmarg meadow are a Kashmir tradition. Available year-round (snow ponies in winter, meadow rides in summer). A gentle half-hour loop or a longer guided forest ride — both are memorable. See our horse riding in Kashmir page for details.
Golf at the World's Highest Course
The Gulmarg Golf Club (18 holes, 2,650 m) is open May–October. Clubs available for hire. Playing here — with Himalayan snowfields visible from the fairway — is a genuinely unique experience that no golf course elsewhere in India can replicate.
Photography & Sunrise Views
The golden hour at Gulmarg is extraordinary. Head to Khilanmarg before sunrise for the best light on Nanga Parbat (the ninth-highest mountain on Earth). In winter, fresh snowfall on the deodar forest makes for some of Kashmir's finest landscape photography.
