Kashmir in May 2026 — Spring at Its Most Spectacular

Why May is One of Kashmir's Finest Months
May occupies a unique position in the Kashmir travel calendar. It's post-tulip season — the Tulip Garden blooms in late March–April, so early May visitors may catch the tail end or find the garden transitioning to other spring flowers. But May has its own distinct and perhaps superior character: the entire valley is at peak green, wildflowers are blooming across Khilanmarg and Pahalgam's meadows, and the temperatures (10–25°C) are the most comfortable of the year.
May is also peak season — meaning the valley is lively and fully operational. Every hotel, houseboat, restaurant, and activity is open and running. The Gulmarg Gondola runs to both phases. Trekking routes are opening up. The Lidder River at Pahalgam runs high and fast from snowmelt — excellent for rafting.

May is one of the best months for Doodhpathri — the "Valley of Milk" is in full spring green with wildflowers blooming and the Shaliganga stream running strongly. Mughal Gardens
While the tulips are past peak, May's Mughal gardens are in full spring transition — roses, irises, and other flowers take over after the tulips. Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh are lush and fragrant, and the Chinar trees are in full green leaf providing cool shade across the terraces.

May Kashmir Travel Tips
Book 6–8 weeks ahead
May is peak season. Houseboats, Gulmarg hotels, and Pahalgam resorts fill up fast — especially weekends and long weekends.
Book Gondola Phase 2 in advance
Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat) is the highlight and sells out quickly in May. Book tickets in advance or start queuing by 7 AM.
Pack for variable weather
May days can reach 25°C but evenings and higher altitudes drop sharply. Layers are essential — light clothes for Srinagar, warm layers for Gulmarg evenings.
Sunscreen is essential
UV radiation is intense in Kashmir's clear spring skies and especially at altitude. Apply SPF 50+ even on cloudy days. Lip balm with SPF too.
Rafting: book the morning slot
Pahalgam rafting is best in the morning when the Lidder flow is highest and the light is best. Afternoon slots are usually fine but morning is superior.
Tulip Garden timing
If Tulip Garden is a priority, check bloom status before booking — the garden peaks in late March to mid-April. By May, tulips are typically finished but other flowers are blooming. Call us for current year bloom updates.
